Medical Experts Fear Looming Pestilence
--> Posted to Pestilence for June, 2003

by Gary Stearman In the twentieth century, we have seen an infamous and sickening parade of wars, famines and diseases. But just as they seemed impossibly overwhelming, solutions were found; peace treaties were signed, charitable organizations brought food to the starving, and medical research came up with miracle drugs. At the present time, there is the common expectation that no matter what the problem, it can and will be fixed.
Still, there is one biblical prophecy in the words of Jesus that carries a particular edge. It always makes one tremble upon considering its dark meaning. He said, "For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences and earthquakes in divers places" (Matthew 24:7).
This century has witnessed all these events. Wars and famines? Yes. Earthquakes? Yes. Pestilence? Of course. But aren't they all under control? There is now peace on earth and earthquakes can be detected. Buildings can be "earthquake-proofed." Or, so say the experts.
But how about pestilence? Here, the medical community is keeping a cautious watch over events that could soon escalate beyond their control. Because of antibiotic overuse, opportunistic infections are now all but unstoppable. Because of drug abusers who throw caution to the wind, many illnesses are being carried from the gutter to the most upscale communities.
